ABSTRACT: Taking account of Friedrich Schlegel’s important contribution for the theory of the german Romanticism, this paper aims to present an overview about the romantic irony, key concept of Schlegel’s thinking and cornerstone of the romantic movement with repercutions beyond Europe. Therefore, aiming to build visibility around this relatively unexplored concept in brazilian literary studies, we propose a review of Schlegel’s theories recorded in the fragments of Lyceum and Athenaeum magazines, as well as a revisitation of other conceptions that surround the romantic irony: parabasis, buffoonery, autocreation, autoannihilation and autolimitation. Besides, for a better undestanding of the complex nuances of the romantic irony, we’ll trace a simple timeline of the concept of irony starting in the Ancient Greece, traveling through medieval times up until the conceiving of Schlegel’s theory. With that in mind, we’ll make use of the theoretical studies of Cuddon (1999), Volobuef (1999) and Medeiros (2014; 2015).

Romanticism.||RESUMO: Considerando as significativas contribuições de Friedrich Schlegel para a a teoria do romantismo alemão, este artigo visa a apresentar um panorama sobre a ironia romântica, conceito chave do pensamento schlegeliano que se tornou pedra angular do movimento romântico, reverberando, inclusive, noutras experiências de romantismo fora do eixo europeu. Assim, com o fito de atribuir maior visibilidade a esse conceito relativamente pouco estudado no âmbito acadêmico brasileiro, propomos uma retomada das teorizações de Schlegel (1987; 1997) em seus fragmentos das revistas Lyceum e Athenaeum, revisitando o plantel de ideias que orbitam a ironia romântica, a saber: parábase, bufonaria, autocriação, autoaniquilamento e autolimitação. Paralelamente, para uma compreensão da ironia romântica em sua complexidade, traçaremos uma breve trajetória referente ao conceito de ironia desde a Grécia antiga, passando pelo medievo até a concepção da ironia romântica de Schlegel. Utilizaremos, para tanto, os aportes teóricos de Cuddon (1999), Volobuef (1999) e Medeiros (2014; 2015).
