Abordamos implicações na constituição do patrimônio cultural na Ilha de Moçambique, com especial atenção às contradições que esse patrimônio vem abrigando na delimitação de seu campo ideológico, simbólico e afetivo, bem como as distâncias entre as representações desse patrimônio para setores técnicos e a população da Ilha. O artigo apresenta o tema memória e patrimônio confrontado com entrevistas com habitantes da Ilha. Os resultados permitiram perceber que sua salvaguarda se depara com imensas dificuldades institucionais (inclusive na aproximação do plano internacional com o local), culturais e econômicas e com uma distância entre anseios e necessidades populares legítimas que, caso não seja revertida, acabará por comprometer o patrimônio material e imaterial de todos que partilham o lugar.||We discuss implications in the cultural heritage of the island of Mozambique, with particular attention to the contradictions generated by the delimitation of its ideological, symbolic and affective fields, as well as the distance between this heritage’s representations for technical segments and the island’s population. The article analyzes memory and heritage while presenting interviews with inhabitants of the island. Through the results, it was possible to realize that the protection of the island’s heritage and memory faces immense difficulties – institutional (including bringing local and international plans together), economic and cultural – and is very distant from the legitimate needs and concerns of local population. If that does not change, it will eventually compromise the tangible and intangible heritage of all those who share the island.
