This article reconstitutes and interprets the notes from the course The films in the city (1966), taught by film critic and historian Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes, based on the comparison with the reference works and the works he published on the history of cinema Brazilian. From this procedure, we will demonstrate how Paulo Emílio interprets the sociocultural expressiveness in Brazilian cinema of themes such as carnival, football and other popular rituals to elucidate the physiognomy of these films and their audience from a historical, cultural and psychological narrative involved in elucidating the past, influence the present and ensure the future of cinematographic activities in Brazil.||O presente artigo reconstitui e interpreta as anotações do curso Os filmes na cidade (1966), ministrado pelo crítico e historiador de cinema Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes, a partir do cotejo com as obras de referência e com os trabalhos que publicou sobre a história do cinema brasileiro. A partir desse procedimento, demonstraremos como Paulo Emílio interpreta a expressividade sociocultural no cinema brasileiro de temas como o carnaval, o futebol e outros rituais populares para elucidar a fisionomia desses filmes e seu público a partir de uma narrativa histórica, cultural e psicológica implicada em elucidar o passado, influir no presente e assegurar o futuro das atividades cinematográficas no Brasil.
