By deliberately assuming that the coercion produced by certain images in contemporary anthropology has collapsed, due to the “spirit of the age”, that is, “the end of modernism”, this article aims at discussing the ways followed in Clifford Geertz’s effort to describe the Balinese world. I focus on the article “Person, time, and conduct in Bali”, stressing that the presence of Alfred Schutz’s phenomenology creates safe ground where Geertz analysis can be filled with metaphors evoking “consistency”, “orga- nization”, “impersonalisation” etc. ||Admitindo deliberadamente que a coerção produzida por certas imagens na antropologia contemporânea esmaeceu devido a um “espírito da época”, o “fim do modernismo”, o artigo que se segue visa a discutir o caminho que Clifford Geertz parece ter seguido com o intuito de descrever o mundo balinês. Debruço-me no ensaio “Pessoa, tempo e conduta em Bali”, realçando que a presença da fenomenologia de Alfred Schutz cria um solo onde a análise de Geertz pode ser preenchida com metáforas que evocam “consistência”, “organização”, “impessoalização”etc.
