A década de 1960 não é apenas um período de profundas transformações sociais, técnicas e culturais, mas mudanças decisivas se produzem também no âmbito dos afetos dos sujeitos, seja dos sujeitos coletivos, seja dos individuais. Ao mesmo tempo, esses novos afetos que se formaram, por sua vez, vão influenciar a transformação social e cultural. O romance Quarup corresponde, em sua estrutura fundamental, a um romance de formação, apesar de apresentar — conforme a nossa leitura — duas modificações básicas, as quais exatamente correspondem às circunstâncias da década de 1960: o processo de aprendizagem do protagonista não mais se orienta em valores e normas (burgueses) aparentemente objetivos, mas sim na relação afetiva do protagonista com o “povo”. Com isso, contudo, o seu processo de aprendizagem necessariamente se torna ao mesmo tempo em uma experiência de “deseducação”, levando-o ao afastamento e à libertação dos valores e das normas tradicionais. No entanto, o povo enquanto sujeito, no qual essa transformação afetiva busca se orientar, nesta década entra mesmo em uma crise que é encenada no filme Terra em transe, de Glauber Rocha, tendo sido muito discutida por Fernando Gabeira, Roberto Schwarz e Caetano Veloso.||The 1960s is not only a decade of profound social, technical and cultural changes, but also of effects within the scope of the subjects' affections, whether of the collective subjects, or of the individual subjects. At the same time, the shaping of these new affects influences social and cultural transformation. In its fundamental structure, the novel Quarup corresponds to that of a coming on age novel (Bildungsroman), although it presents — according to our reading — two basic modifications, which exactly correspond to the circumstances of the 1960s: the protagonist's learning process is no longer oriented towards apparently objective (bourgeois) values and norms, but rather follows the protagonist's affective relationship with the “people”. This learning process necessarily becomes an experience of “diseducation”, leading the character to the release of traditional values and norms. However, the people as subject, in whom this affective transformation takes place, evinces also a crisis during the period that is staged in Glauber Rocha's film Terra em transe, which has been widely discussed by Fernando Gabeira, Roberto Schwarz and Caetano Veloso.
