The article presents the results of a comparison between profiles of white and black defendants who were indicted for robbery with aggravating circunstances in the municipality of São Paulo in 1990. It is part of a study earlier results of which have already been published (Adorno, 1995). Comparative analysis indicates that there are no statistically significant differences between the two social profiles, except for the fact that there are higher rates of illiteracy and unemployment among black defendants. These differences provide no basis for the hypothesis that black defendants are naturally given to violent crime, in comparison with white defendants. They also point to different forms of access to the world of legality for these two racial groups.||Este artigo relata resultados de uma comparação entre o perfil de réus brancos e o de réus negros, condenados, no município de São Paulo, no ano de 1990, em crime de roubo qualificado. Trata-se de continuidade de pesquisa cujos primeiros resultados já foram anteriormente publicados (Adorno, 1995). A análise comparativa indica que não há diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre ambos os perfis sociais, exceto que réus negros revelam maiores taxas de analfabetismo e de desemprego. Tais diferenças não se prestam a sustentar a hipótese de que os réus negros sejam naturalmente inclinados para a prática de crime violento, comparativamente aos réus brancos. De igual modo, sugerem diferentes modalidades de inserção desses grupos raciais no mundo da legalidade.
