One of the recent developments in the Latin American context is surely the growing public impact of identity claims and disputes, which are connected to demands for citizenship rights and justice or for political representation. The cultural dimension of this process is, inextricably, linked with the political one, both in a symbolic and a political sense. This article explores one of the particular instances of the process: the public emergence of religions and its relation to endogenous changes to Latin American societies and to the effects of global flows on the dynamics of the former. The analysis, which is part of a broader comparative study under way will focus on the field of Christianity in Brazil and Argentina. Key words: religion, identity, citizenship, justice.||Uma das novidades no cenário latino-americano é a crescente dimensão pública das disputas identitárias, as quais são conectadas às demandas, seja por cidadania e justiça ou por representação. A dimensão cultural, neste processo, aparece inextricavelmente ligada à dimensão política, tanto no sentido simbólico como no institucional. Este artigo explora um dos casos particulares de expressão deste processo: a emergência pública das religiões e sua relação com mudanças internas a sociedades latino-americanas e com os efeitos dos fluxos globais sobre a dinâmica destas sociedades. A análise, que é parte de um estudo comparativo mais amplo, em curso, trata do campo cristão em dois países da América Latina: Brasil e Argentina.
