This article presents the important role that Science took place in the literature of Machado de Assis, by virtue of the author has curiosity for the scientific studies of Spencer and Darwin; at the same time, he thinks about and contemplates on the directions that Science can take, depending on the use that can be attributed to it and in which circumstances. In many stories of Machado de Assis, this dilemma that the author brings can be noticed, as well as the polemics he raises in relation to the scientific principles. Being like this, those stories can bring vital importance to discuss, nowdays, in the classrooms, the Science, its paradigms and its consequences, mainly when we are amid important scientific discussions as clones and trunk cells, that should change the picture of the scientific experiences.Keywords: Science, Literature, Machado de Assis, teaching.||Este artigo apresenta o importante papel que a Ciência exerceu na literatura de Machado de Assis, em virtude de o autor ter curiosidade pelos estudos científicos de Spencer e de Darwin, ao mesmo tempo em que igualmente reflete e pondera sobre os rumos que a Ciência pode tomar, dependendo do uso que lhe possa ser atribuído e em que circunstâncias. Em muitos contos machadianos pode-se perceber este dilema que o autor traz, tanto quanto as polêmicas que ele suscita em relação aos princípios científicos. Sendo assim, esses contos podem ser de vital importância para se discutir, hoje, nas salas de aula, a Ciência, seus paradigmas e suas conseqüências, principalmente quando estamos em meio a discussões científicas relevantes como clonagem e células tronco, que deverão mudar o quadro das experiências científicas.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Ciência, Literatura, Machado de Assis, ensino.
