This article compares aspects of the formative process of Brazilian literature with those of other Western literatures, in the Old and New Worlds, and examines certain peculiarities of Brazilian nationality, with the aim of identifying their effects on Antonio Candido’s concepts of formation and literary system, and demonstrating that the insistence on the nation as the unit of analysis limits the usefulness of these concepts in other contexts.||
Esse trabalho compara aspectos do processo formativo da literatura brasileira com outras literaturas ocidentais, no Velho Mundo e no Novo, e examina certas especificidades da nacionalidade brasileira, procurando identificar seus efeitos nos conceitos candidianos de formação e de sistema literário, e mostrar que a hipertrofia do recorte da nação limita a aplicabilidade desses conceitos em outros contextos.
