This article aims to analyze the importance of the grotesque as a new esthetics which takes place in the Romantic period, and to examine its links with the fantastic literature as well. Since the grotesque puts together opposite elements, it presents itself as a possibility for translating what seems to be elusive, which destabilizes the means of familiar perception and undermines trust in a universal order invested with meaning.||Este artigo destaca a importância do grotesco como novidade estética no período romântico e examina sua aproximação com a literatura fantástica. Pela presença simultânea de elementos opostos, o grotesco apresenta-se como uma possibilidade de traduzir aquilo que parece escapar à compreensão, que desestabiliza os vetores da percepção familiar e abala a confiança em uma ordem universal investida de um sentido.
