This article focuses on the institutional conditions for the internationalization of Portuguese historiography in the past 20 years. Its aim is to explain why the international historiographical community still has a limited knowledge about the Portuguese historical reality, and about the work carried out by Portuguese historians. The first part is comprised by a discussion of the contributions that were made within a debate promoted in 2003 by the e-Journal of Portuguese History. The second part of this article discusses the subsequent evolution of the Portuguese historiographical milieu, emphasizing the areas in which its internationalization has been more successful.||Este texto pretende apresentar as condições institucionais da internacionalização da produção historiográfica em Portugal nos últimos 20 anos e propor explicações para o facto de a comunidade historiográfica internacional deter ainda um deficiente conhecimento sobre as realidades históricas portuguesas e sobre o trabalho dos historiadores portugueses. Após um diagnóstico inicial em que se resumem os principais contributos de um debate que teve lugar no e-Journal of Portuguese History em 2003, apresentam-se dados de balanço sobre a evolução posterior, com destaque para as temáticas de investigação onde a internacionalização tem sido conseguida de forma mais consistente.
