Trata-se de uma atividade econômica importante para o território nacional, pois revela uma variedade de interações espaciais que abrangem a complexa rede urbana do país. A flexibilidade do ônibus rodoviário e a capilaridade do serviço são centrais para o atendimento a cidades de portes variados, pois permite a conexão entre centros urbanos com menos de cinco mil habitantes até a conexão entre metrópoles como Brasília/DF, Rio de Janeiro/RJ e São Paulo/SP. Este artigo debaterá tais deslocamentos de pessoas pelo modal rodoviário a partir da análise que contemplará as cidades pequenas na região Sul do Brasil, tendo a formação socioespacial como base para o entendimento das dinâmicas atinentes ao recorte e de suas articulações com a divisão territorial do trabalho.
