This article addresses the formation of the Vilas de Indios of the Maranhão captaincy during the Pombaline Directory regime, which transformed former Jesuit settlements and farms in the region intovillages and places. The objective is to discuss the multiple meanings of the formation of villages and indigenous places from a joint approach to the information contained in the Book of Records of Foundations, Erections and Possessions of Villages (1757-1767) and other documents produced in the period, seeking to analyze the modus operandi of Governor Gonçalo Pereira Lobato e Sousa as to how to apply the provisions of the Directory in the captaincy of Maranhão. Furthermore, I seek to problematize the political participation of indigenous peoples in the chambers. Finally, I reflect on the economic dynamism in indigenous villages and places.||Este artigo tem por tema a formação das Vilas de Índios da capitania do Maranhão durante o regime do Diretório pombalino, que transformou antigos aldeamentos jesuítas e fazendas da região em vilas e lugares. O objetivo é discutir os múltiplos sentidos da formação das vilas e lugares indígenas a partir deuma abordagem conjunta das informações contidas no Livro deRegistros de Fundações, Ereções e Posses de Vilas(1757-1767) e outros documentos produzidos no período, procurando analisar o modus operandido governador Gonçalo Pereira Lobato e Sousa quanto aforma de aplicar os dispositivos do Diretório na capitania do Maranhão. Além disso, busco problematizar a participação política dos indígenas nas câmaras. Por fim, faço reflexões sobre o dinamismo econômico nas vilas e lugares indígenas.
