Literary criticism has, for the most part, describedwith Homer’s Iliad based on a kind of interpretationthat reduces the work to a military paideia. In thiskind of reductionist reading, both Achilles and Hectorhave been exemplified as models of a virtue linked tomilitary exercise. However, I intend to demonstratein this paper how the figure of Hector, contrary towhat tradition has been largely attesting, is anexample of freedom of spirit, thus emphasizing hishumanity and his antagonism as to the attitude ofcharacter in relation to the figure of Achilles..Keywords: Homer; Achilles; Hector; Human Freedom.||A crítica literária tem grandemente acomodado aIlíada, de Homero, em um tipo de interpretaçãoque reduz a obra a uma paideia militar. Nessetipo de leitura reducionista, tanto Aquiles quantoHeitor têm sido exemplificados como modelo deuma virtude ligada ao exercício militar.
