The article presents a general framework for understanding the Brazilian historiography of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and the National School of Fine Arts, pointing the most important theorists, principal tendencies and lacunes. Still brings a panorama of international studies on the academies of art, focusing on major authors and their works. The article finally suggests some relevant theoretical premises to the understanding of the functioning of the Brazilian Academy.Keywords: Academies of Fine Arts, historiography, theoretical premises||O artigo apresenta um quadro geral da historiografia da arte brasileira sobre a Academia Imperial das Belas Artes e da Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, apontando os principais teóricos, as principais tendências e lacunas. Traz, ainda, um panorama dos estudos internacionais sobre as academias de arte, dando destaque aos principais autores e suas obras. O artigo, por fim, sugere algumas premissas teóricas relevantes para a compreensão do funcionamento da academia brasileira.
