This text is a preliminary reflection on the profile of Rio de Janeiro's intellectual community during the 1920s and 1930s, years marked by the presence of the modernist movement. Certain intellectuals are localized within the period's ideological landscape and attention is focused on how they organized themselves socialy and produced and publicized their ideas. Working with the notion of sociability, the article identifies some dimensions of the intellectual tradition of the city of Rio de Janeiro: the strenght of so-called Bohemian life since the nineteenth century; the closeness of the Brazilian Academy of Letters; and the importance of Catholic militancy which took shape in the 1920s.||Este texto é uma reflexão preliminar sobre o perfil da comunidade intelectual do Rio de Janeiro durante os anos 20 e 30, anos marcados pela presença do movimento modernista. Alguns intelectuais são situados dentro do cenário ideológico e focaliza-se a atenção em como eles se organizaram socialmente e publicizaram suas idéias. Trabalhando com a noção de sociabilidade, o artigo identifica algumas dimensões da tradição intelectual do Rio de Janeiro: a força da assim chamada "vida boêmia" desde o século XX; a proximidade da Academia Brasileira de Letras; e a grande influência do catolicismo militante dos anos 20.
