It is the scope of this article to analyze São Paulo’s Corpo Policial Permanente as a valid option of occupation for an important portion of the state poor population, whose attributes were male gender, Brazilian origin and non-white ethnicity. This period is characterized by a crisis of slavery production-based system, the beginning of the mass immigration and the transfer of coffee plantations to the West.||It is the scope of this article to analyze São Paulo’s Corpo Policial Permanente as a valid option of occupation for an important portion of the state poor population, whose attributes were male gender, Brazilian origin and non-white ethnicity. This period is characterized by a crisis of slavery production-based system, the beginning of the mass immigration and the transfer of coffee plantations to the West.||Neste artigo pretendo analisar o Corpo Policial Permanente de São Paulo no final do Império como uma alternativa de ocupação para uma importante parcela da população pobre, formada principalmente de homens, brasileiros e não-brancos. O período em questão marca a crise do regime escravista, o início da chegada maciça de imigrantes e a transferência das áreas de fronteira agrícola para o Oeste da província.
