Na atualidade, em meio a um quadro de violências, incertezas e injustiças, a reflexão sobre a tolerância volta a ocupar um lugar central. Entender a formação desse conceito pode nos ajudar a compreender as contradições da contemporaneidade expressas por uma crescente xenofobia pelo migrante e pelo refugiado, sem entender que o exercício de alteridade poderia ser a melhor saída para a rigidez da intolerância frente ao novo, ao xenos. A ambivalência da noção de tolerância, como uma questão teológico-politica, continua no tempo presente: para alguns, trata-se de uma virtude a ser cultivada para evitar o reaparecimento de terríveis enfrentamentos; para outros, dificulta a consolidação de um verdadeiro regime de liberdade. A compreensão dessa questão requer uma releitura da emergência dessa ideia na Modernidade. Essa é a proposta deste texto.Palavras-chave: Tolerância. Intolerância. Poder político. Soberania. The ambivalence of the concept of tolerance, as a theological-political issue, continues at the present time: for some, it is a virtue to be cultivated to prevent the reappearance of terrible clashes; for others, it hinders the consolidaton of a true freedom.
