Esse artigo discute a performance enquanto manifestação artística. Diante da dificuldade de precisar as características gerais desse gênero experimental, utilizei a semiótica como principal ferramenta para analisar um ato performático e compará-lo a outras duas obras, a fim de destacar a existência de fenômenos recorrentes nos diferentes casos. Por meio de uma abordagem greimasiana, foi analisada a obra “The Couple in the Cage: A Guatinaui Odyssey”, um ato performático realizado no ano de 1992, por dois artistas lanito-americanos, Guillermo Gomez-Peña e Coco Fusco, os quais, vestidos como aborígenes, trancaram-se em uma jaula e passaram três dias compondo parte do acervo de museus da Europa, EUA e México. A performance em questão foi comparada com “Rape Scene” (1973), da artista Ana Mendieta, e “First Woman at the Moon” (1999), realizada por Aleksandra Mir, sendo um dos principais objetivos dessa investigação o levantamento de elementos comuns a todas as obras, possibilitando uma observação mais precisa de tais fenômenos a fim de demonstrar que tais obras possuem aspectos por meio dos quais é possível agrupá-las na categoria “performance”, pois essa linguagem se difere de outras manifestações artísticas (como a música, teatro, pintura, etc.) e garante sua autonomia por meio de uma série de características próprias ao gênero.||This article discusses performance as an artistic manifestation. Facing the challenge of making thegeneral characteristics of this genre more precise, I made use of semiotics as the main tool to analyze aperformatic act and compare it to two works of the same nature, in order to highlight the existence of recurringphenomena on different cases. Through Greimasian semiotics analysis, a study of the performance "TheCouple in the Cage: A Guatinaui Odyssey", conducted by the Latin American artists Guillermo Gomes-Penaand Coco Fusco was made. During the act, the artists locked themselves in a cage and spent three daysmaking part of the expositions in museums in Europe, USA and Mexico. This performance was compared to "Rape Scene" (1973), by Ana Mendieta and "First Woman at the Moon" (1999), by Aleksandra Mir; being one of the main objectives of this investigation the gathering of elements which are common to all works, enabling a more precise observation of these phenomena in order to demonstrate that these works have aspects through which it is possible to group then under the category of "performance", for this language is different from other artistic manifestations (such as music, theater, painting, etc.) and guarantees its autonomy via a series of characteristics which belong strictly to the genre.
