O ensaio detém-se na análise e interpretação de “O espelho”, de Machado de Assis, e procura articular alguns dos diferentes “níveis de realidade” presentes no conto por meio da imagem do jogo de espelhos, visando igualmente ao estabelecimento de relações entre essa e outras narrativas machadianas. Busca-se compreender o protagonista em suas diversas faces — narrador da própria história, uma espécie de alter-ego do escritor, membro da burguesia brasileira e capitalista —, bem como destacar seu lado demoníaco.||This essay analyses “O espelho” by Machado de Assis and attempts to link a number of the various “levels of reality” which are present in the story through the image of the set of mirrors and connect this story to other narratives of Machado. It tries to understand the different aspects of the protagonist: the narrator of the story itself a kind of alter ego of the author; a member of the Brazilian capitalist bourgeoisie, and also emphasizes the demoniacal side of the protagonist.
