The videogame industry has been booming worldwide for the past thirty years. Ranking better than music and cinema according to turnover, games are the first choice of consumers in the Spanish leisure industry. However, given the imbalance between domestic production and consumer demand, most of the titles available in Spain have to be localized by foreign publishers prior to marketing, to be linguistically and –where appropriate– culturally adapted to the demands of the domestic market. Localization costs become most of times an insurmountable barrier for minority languages. In the case of Galician, this results in the non-existence of a proper local market and creates an apparently unsolvable vicious circle for language standardization in this area. In this context and inspired by its Brazilian counterpart, the ScummGL project is created within the Master's Degree Program in Multimedia Translation in the University of Vigo to provide Galician versions of classic video games.||A industria videolúdica está a experimentar un auxe en todo o mundo desde os últimos trinta anos e supón, no caso español e segundo a súa facturación, a primeira opción de ocio de consumo, por riba da música e do cinema. Con todo, e debido ao desequilibrio entre produción propia e demanda do consumidor, a meirande parte dos títulos comercializados en España son previamente localizados polas empresas distribuidoras, co gallo de adaptalos lingüís-tica e, de ser o caso, tamén culturalmente ás exixencias do mercado estatal. Os custos da localización representan case sempre unha barreira infranqueábel para as linguas minorizadas. No caso do galego, ademais, tradúcense na ausencia dun mercado especí-fico, que xera un círculo vicioso aparente-mente irresolúbel para a normalización lingua deste eido. Neste contexto, nace na Universidade de Vigo, no Mestrado en Tradución Multimedia, o proxecto ScummGL, inspirado no seu homólogo brasileiro, co obxectivo de ofrecer versións localizadas ao galego de videoxogos clásicos.ABSTRACTThe videogame industry has been booming worldwide for the past thirty years.
