Virginia Woolf's carrer as an essayist begins around ten years before the publication of her first novel. While considering the nature of the problems posed to the fiction of her time, Woolf highlights the Russian literature of the second half of the nineteenth century. This paper seeks to investigate the extent to which the peculiarities of the Russian fiction underscored by the author are responses to questions she herself would face in her work.||A carreira de Virginia Woolf como ensaísta tem início por volta de dez anos antes da publicação de seu primeiro romance. Refletindo sobre a natureza dos problemas postos à ficção contemporânea sua, Woolf dá particular destaque à produção russa da segunda metade do século XIX. O presente artigo procura investigar em que medida as peculiaridades da ficção russa salientadas pela autora são respostas às questões que ela própria enfrentaria em suas obras.
