In order to avoid falling into the trap of a back projecting of Noam Chomsky’s thought in 20th century linguistics to Wilhelm von Humboldt’s ideas, in this article we start from a detailed analysis of the thought of the Prussian philosopher and highlight, in particular, his reflections on the notions of “creativity” and “form” that managed to draw Chomsky’s attention at an early stage. In particular, we note that the two thinkers agree in their rejection of theories (dominant in the history of linguistic thought) that conceive language primarily as a communicative system or an inventory of lexical units that represent our concepts or external world.Keywords: Humboldt. Merge.||Querendo evitar cair na armadilha de uma retroprojeção do pensamento de Noam Chomsky, na linguística do século XX, para as ideias de Wilhelm von Humboldt, neste artigo, partimos de uma análise detalhada do pensamento do filósofo prussiano e pomos em relevo, em particular, as suas reflexões em torno das noções de “criatividade” e de “forma”, que conseguiram chamar a atenção de Chomsky já numa fase precoce. Especialmente, salientamos que os dois pensadores concordam na sua rejeição de teorias (dominantes na história do pensamento linguístico) que concebem a linguagem principalmente como sistema comunicativo ou um inventário de unidades lexicais que representam os nossos conceitos ou mundo externo.Palavras-chave: Humboldt.
